5 Great Remedies for Depression

Depression…

Depression is deep seated sadness.

Depression is loss of joy.

Depression is over worry.

Depression is fear.

Depression is anger turned inward.

Depression is heavy.

Depression is dark.

Depression is many things.

Sometimes we can pinpoint the event or events that led to depression.  Sometimes it creeps up on us without warning.

What do we do when we realize we are struggling with depression?

Depression is a common mental health disorder that affects millions of people around the world. While there are many conventional treatments for depression, some people prefer to try natural remedies like homeopathy, a personal preference of mine.

Homeopathy is a holistic approach to healing that uses highly diluted natural substances to stimulate the body's innate healing ability. In this blog, we will explore the top 5 homeopathic remedies for depression.

  1. Ignatia Amara: Ignatia Amara is a homeopathic remedy that is often used to treat depression and other emotional issues. It is made from the seeds of the St. Ignatius bean, which is native to the Philippines. This remedy is especially useful for people who are experiencing grief or sadness due to a loss or trauma. Symptoms that indicate Ignatia Amara may be helpful include mood swings, tearfulness, and a tendency to withdraw from others.

  2. Natrum Muriaticum: Natrum Muriaticum is a homeopathic remedy that is made from sodium chloride. This remedy is often used to treat depression that is associated with feelings of grief or loss. People who may benefit from Natrum Muriaticum may have difficulty expressing their emotions and may withdraw from others. Other symptoms may include a lack of appetite, headaches, and a feeling of being "stuck" or trapped.

  3. Aurum Metallicum: Aurum Metallicum is a homeopathic remedy that is made from gold. This remedy is often used to treat depression that is associated with feelings of worthlessness or a loss of self-esteem. People who may benefit from Aurum Metallicum may experience deep feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair. They may also have physical symptoms such as insomnia, loss of appetite, and fatigue.

  4. Lycopodium: Lycopodium is a homeopathic remedy that is made from the spores of a type of moss. This remedy is often used to treat depression that is associated with a lack of self-confidence or fear of failure. People who may benefit from Lycopodium may have a tendency to be irritable or easily angered, and may also experience digestive issues such as bloating or constipation.

  5. Pulsatilla: Pulsatilla is a homeopathic remedy that is made from the windflower plant. This remedy is often used to treat depression that is associated with feelings of abandonment or insecurity. People who may benefit from Pulsatilla may be highly sensitive to their surroundings and may experience mood swings. They may also have physical symptoms such as a loss of appetite or digestive issues.

My personal experience with depression and the remedies I used:

I’ve experienced depression at various times in my life.  I’m not ashamed to admit it and neither should you be. Before homeopathy and natural living, the answers were pharma drugs and therapy.  Neither of which seems to really help. And little did I know that the use of SSRIs would come back to bite me later on in life.

When my mom passed away at 26 years old, I was devastated. It took years to recover and sent me into a tailspin of on-going health challenges. (To hear more about that story watch the RSB podcast found here: RSB & Vibrant Life 24/7.) Ignatia and Nat mur surely would have been of great help back then.

I’ve also experienced Seasonal Affective Disorder, a form of depression initiated by the seasonal changes when days of sunlight are few and far between. By this time, I knew about Homeopathy so Aurum was a life saver.

After a long distance move, I was feeling weepy and as if no one was helping me get our family settled in. This feeling, although not accurate, was forged in my mind. I was overwhelmed. Pulsatilla helped pull me back together and see things as they truly were.

When my oldest went away to college, I could feel it creeping in. Ignatia to the rescue again. Same when my baby went to college.

These remedies are powerful and some of the most frequently used remedies in my practice, not just for depression but for anger, anxiety, frustration, etc.

Homeopathy offers a holistic approach to treating depression that can be highly effective. Homeopathic remedies based on your presenting symptoms and my approach is highly individualized.  This is part of what makes homeopathy such a powerful option for treating depression and other emotional issues.
