Repeating Patterns That No Longer Serve You (or perhaps never did)?

The technical term for this is Repetition Compulsion. And it can make you feel like you are in a cage.

Repetition compulsion is a psychological phenomenon in which individuals unconsciously repeat past traumas or negative patterns in their lives. Coined by Sigmund Freud, this concept sheds light on why individuals may find themselves stuck in cycles of behavior that seem to perpetuate their pain and suffering.

Often rooted in unresolved childhood trauma or early life experiences, repetition compulsion can manifest in various ways, from repeatedly choosing unhealthy relationships to engaging in self-sabotaging behaviors. Despite the desire to break free from these patterns, individuals may find themselves trapped in a cycle of repetition, unable to move forward.

How a Life Coach Can Help

A life coach plays a pivotal role in helping individuals untangle the web of repetition compulsion and reclaim agency over their lives. Through a process of introspection and self-discovery, I help my clients clarify their values, identify limiting beliefs, and address underlying emotional wounds.

One of the key strategies I employ is the clarification of values. By helping clients articulate what truly matters to them and what they aspire to create in their lives, we establish a guiding compass for navigating decision-making and behavior change. By aligning actions with core values, you can break free from the grip of repetition compulsion and move towards a more authentic and fulfilling life.

Additionally, I work with clients to address childhood trauma and unresolved emotional wounds, creating a safe space for clients to explore their past experiences and heal from the inside out.

Additional Tools for Healing

In addition to coaching, there are various holistic tools that can support the process of healing from repetition compulsion. These remedies aim to restore balance to the mind, body, and spirit, promoting overall well-being and emotional resilience. I commonly employ these in my practice.

●        Bach Flower Remedies: Bach flower remedies such as Rock Rose, Star of Bethlehem, and Cherry Plum can help alleviate feelings of fear, trauma, and inner turmoil, promoting emotional stability and resilience.

●        Mind-Body Practices: A foundational tool in my practice is meditation.  I’ll teach you how to do it with ease and simplicity.

●        Herbal Supplements: Certain herbs such as St. John's Wort, lemon balm, and skullcap have calming properties that can support relaxation and reduce anxiety, aiding in the management of stress-related symptoms.

●        Tapping: Tapping is an energy based technique that helps to quiet the nervous system and release held trauma. We will do this together and I’ll teach you how to use this practice at home.

●        Homeopathic Remedies:  A journey with me would not be complete without your customized homeopathic remedies to support our journey.

Rachael’s Story: Finding Freedom from Repetition Compulsion

Consider Rachael, a successful entrepreneur who struggled with a pattern of self-sabotage in her personal relationships. Despite her achievements in her career, Rachael found herself repeatedly drawn to partners who mirrored the dynamics of her tumultuous childhood, creating on-going disappointment and emotional abuse.

By the time she found her way to me, she had tried therapy, antidepressants, anti-anxiety, yoga, meditation, all kinds of self-help books, had adrenal fatigue and was starting to suffer from multiple physical ailments.  She was literally worn out.

As we began working together, Rachael began to unravel the underlying patterns driving her repetition compulsion. By clarifying her values and addressing her childhood trauma, she gained a deeper understanding of herself and her relational patterns.

Supported by her customized homeopathic remedies and several of the tools mentioned above, gradually, she learned to cultivate healthier relationships built on mutual respect, trust, and authenticity. Today, Rachael lives with a newfound sense of freedom and self-empowerment, embracing life's challenges with courage and resilience.

"Lisa helped me change such deeply ingrained patterns that I never thought I would be able to change. Every step of the way she was there with me, patient, loving, kind and forceful when I needed it. She helped me realize why I was repeating the destructive relationships and how to heal my childhood trauma.  I am a completely different person now and know that I will never go back.  Thank you Lisa."
